Fred Frith, improvisor

The documentary Step Across the Border was transformative for me when it appeared in 1990.  It is an entire film devoted to musical improvisor Fred Frith, he of the found sounds and altered guitars - inspiring and freeing at the least!  Over the following decades I have sensed a strong relationship between meditation practice and listening to experimental music.  At its best, this means there is more freedom and flexibility in reaction to stimuli.  For example, harsh words sometimes seem like harsh music or sounds, inspiring less automatic, knee-jerk reactions.  Not to claim too much, but this tempers the reactionary mind and creates some space to explore.

For more Fred Frith, read this 2016 interview and check out www.fredfrith.com

A Sweeter Music | Terry Riley | "Be Kind to One Another"

Beautiful music, beautiful video effects and beautiful memories triggered...

The opening scene is Peter's mother's project, the music reminds me I saw "In C" performed live at Cal Arts and the video reminds me of the abstract movies Peter took us to see.  Whatever happened to Gene Youngblood?
